Montgomery Co Adds 14 New COVID-19 Cases, Fewest Since March 2020

ROCKVILLE, MD — The number of new COVID-19 cases in Montgomery County fell to 14 on Thursday — its lowest level since the pandemic began in March 2020.

The latest addition pushes the countywide total to 70,089 cases.

Two more people died from the virus overnight, according to health officials, bringing the local total to 1,479.

The latest fatality count does not include the 46 others whose deaths were linked to the virus but never confirmed by a lab test. For now, they are considered "probable deaths."

Montgomery County — which is home to roughly 1 million people — continues to have the highest number of deaths in the state. It also has the second-highest number of confirmed cases, after Prince George's County, which has 83,598, according to the latest figures.

Across Maryland, there have been 451,267 cases, 8,631 confirmed deaths, and 191 "probable deaths." Of the 901 people currently being hospitalized statewide, 238 are in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

The positivity rate measures the percentage of COVID-19 tests that come back positive in a one-week span. According to data released Thursday, Maryland's test positivity rate is 3.66 percent. In Montgomery County, it's 2.02 percent — down from 2.08 percent the day before.

To date, Maryland has administered 5,047,436 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine. Among those, 2,828,179 were first doses and 2,023,236 were second doses.

In Montgomery County, 575,067 residents (54.7 percent) have received their first dose. A total of 417,002 residents (39.7 percent) have already gotten their second and final shot.
