New Bus Route To New York City Will Stop In Rockville

The bus route to New York City will run three days a week — with one-way fares as low as $25.

OurBus, a tech company specializing in crowdsourced intercity and commuter bus routes, has launched express bus service from Tyson’s, Va., to New York City, with stops in Bethesda and Rockville, Md., starting Sunday, Nov 18, in partnership with Chariots for Hire, a Washington, D.C. based transportation company.

To start, service will operate three days a week, with one-way fares costing as low as $25.

"We saw a terrific opportunity to provide local Tyson’s residents a more efficient, less stressful travel option to NYC,” said Axel Hellman, co-founder, OurBus. “Rather than traveling to a city center such as Arlington or D.C., and paying for parking, our customers can board our buses close to their home and work. Moreover, OurBus is a cost effective option, as compared to flying or taking a ride on other bus services, where tickets can cost upwards of $35 to $75. We received positive feedback when we piloted the Maryland service over Labor Day weekend of this year, so we decided to make it a permanent transportation option for locals.”

The Tyson’s bus stop is located on Dolley Madison Boulevard in front of the McLean Station on the Washington Metro Silver Line. Bethesda customers can board at Rockville Pike, east side of the street, just north of Marinelli Drive, in close proximity to the White Flint Metro Station on the Red Line. The Rockville stop is located at the Georgia Ave Park & Ride, just before Route 200/Intercounty Connector.

Expansion to Virginia - where numerous requests for service from residents of Northern Virginia promoted OurBus to enter this market - comes on the heels of the company’s foray into the Texas and Oklahoma markets, offering pop-up routes during the Thanksgiving travel rush in Austin, College Station, Houston, Dallas and Oklahoma City, starting on Nov. 20, with tickets on sale now.

OurBus, which started offering commuter and intercity routes on the East Coast in 2016, is aggressively expanding to university and college towns across the country, and transportation deserts, where there are limited cost-effective transportation options. The company has expanded to more than 50 cities in the U.S. including New York, Washington, D.C., Ithaca, N.Y. and Miami.

OurBus prides itself on launching pop-up routes quickly, and with schedules that take into account rider preferences, and having the ability to launch a route, in many cases, in two weeks or less. The company brings agility and creativity to the bus transportation industry; creating routes in partnership with current and future customers, via crowdsourcing and offering special service during holidays, and seasonally. By using crowdsourcing to bring efficient bus service to leisure travelers, students, and families on a budget, OurBus is bucking the traditional bus service model, which utilizes a point to point network concept, recognizing that travelers need reliable and efficient transportation that’s close to their home, with less transfers, and less time in the car.

It’s easy to book tickets and suggest new service, by downloading the free OurBus app from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store. OurBus customers have the ability to:

  • Eliminate the guesswork – track OurBus status via mobile phone
  • Eliminate the hassle – no need to wait on long, slow lines at the bus station to purchase tickets
  • Eliminate the stress – OurBus transportation planners share travel updates with customers in real-time and via social media

The company is now offering the OurBus Select Membership program, targeting students, frequent travelers, and families on a budget. Members will receive 50% off of 10 tickets, for $49.99.
