Police Investigating Series of Car Fires in Rockville Neighborhood

Three cars were completely destroyed, and the fire's heat even caused parts of the fronts of homes to start melting, police said.

Montgomery County Police are investigating the cause of a series of car fires that completely destroyed three cars and even caused damage to nearby homes in Rockville Thursday night.

WTOP reports residents in the King Farm neighborhood heard a series of loud explosions Thursday evening as cars were engulfed in flames.

At this time, Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services officials estimate the damage caused by the blaze at around $120,000.

Police haven't yet officially disclosed their findings, but told WTOP it appears the fire started in one of the cars, and then spread to two other nearby vehicles, engulfing all three.

The heat from the blaze was so intense, WTOP reports it even caused the shutters, blinds and doorknobs in the closest homes to start melting.

Police are still investigating whether the fire was accidental, or set intentionally.
