Rockville Cancels Independence Day Celebration Due To Coronavirus

Rockville's Fourth of July celebration was canceled because of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

ROCKVILLE, MD — The City of Rockville has canceled its Independence Day Celebration because of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

The event was scheduled to take place Saturday, July 4 at Mattie J.T. Stepanek Park.

Like Rockville, thousands of municipalities across the country are canceling their annual Fourth of July festivities due to concerns over COVID-19.

Much remains unknown about the new coronavirus, but health officials believe the disease spreads through respiratory droplets produced when people speak, breathe, cough, and sneeze.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends people to stay at least six feet apart from each other and to avoid large gatherings.

As of Monday, May 18, Montgomery County has 8,417 confirmed cases and 442 deaths.

The county has the highest number of deaths in Maryland. It also has the second highest number of confirmed cases, after Prince George's County, which has 11,608.
