Rockville Celebrates National Police Week

From the City of Rockville: The Mayor and Council issued a proclamation on Mondaydeclaring May 14-20 as National Police Week and recognizing how members of the Rockville City Police Department (RCPD) "play an essential role in safeguarding the rights and freedoms of the citizens of Rockville."

The proclamation called upon the community to thank "police officers, past and present, who by their faithful and loyal devotion have established an enviable and enduring reputation for preserving the rights and security of all citizens."

In 1962, President John F. Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the calendar week in which May 15 falls as National Police Week.

Rockville officers are joining officers from around the nation in attending observances in Montgomery County and Washington, D.C., including:

• Wednesday's annual Montgomery County Fallen Heroes Memorial Service, at 10:30 a.m. at the public safety memorial at county police headquarters, 100 Edison Park Drive, Gaithersburg.
• An arrival ceremony for the Police Unity Tour, a bike ride to raise awareness about officers killed in the line of duty that has raised nearly $16 million for the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, at 2 p.m. on Thursday, May 11 at the memorial, in the 400 block of E Street, NW.
• The 29th annual candlelight vigil to remember fallen officers, at 8 p.m. on Saturday, May 13 on the National Mall, between 4th and 7th streets.
• The 36th Annual National Peace Officers' Memorial Service, at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 15 on the West Front of the United States Capitol.

The Rockville Police Honor Guard and Motor Units are providing escorts to family and friends of fallen officers from Reagan National Airport to hotels from May 11-12.
