Severe Thunderstorm Warning Issued For Montgomery County

The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Montgomery County on Wednesday, July 17.

ROCKVILLE, MD — A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for parts of Montgomery County and surrounding areas Wednesday. The National Weather Service issued the warning after a severe thunderstorm was detected Northern Virginia, with 60 mph wind gusts.

Radar showed the storm system moving east over Lansdowne at 35 mph at 4:42 p.m., officials said. The severe thunderstorm warning is in effect until 5:30 p.m.

During the severe thunderstorm warning period, people should go inside to stay safe from wind and lightning. Do not drive underneath wooded areas until the threat has passed, as trees and branches may fall. Roads may become blocked by downed trees, and localized power outages are possible, according to the warning.

Areas that may be impacted include: Rockville, Gaithersburg, Germantown, Damascus, Aspen Hill, Poolesville, Potomac, North Bethesda, Montgomery Village, Reston, Leesburg, Lansdowne, and Herndon.
