ROCKVILLE, MD — Wedged between Black Friday and Cyber Monday is Small Business Saturday — an annual holiday shopping tradition that encourages people to patronize mom-and-pop stores in their area.

American Express created Small Business Saturday in 2010 as a way to help struggling small businesses rebound from the economic recession. But in this day and age — when business owners are whipsawed by coronavirus-related restrictions and shutdowns — patronizing your local ice cream or stationary store on Small Business Saturday is more important than ever.

"You might not realize it, but every time you pick up a cup of coffee from your favorite neighborhood cafe or buy a gift from a local artist's online store, you're shopping small and making a difference," American Express said in a statement. "In fact, 62 percent of U.S. small businesses reported that they need to see consumer spending return to pre-COVID levels by the end of 2020 in order to stay in business."
