Severe Thunderstorm Warning In Effect, Tornado Warning Expires

The tornado warning issued for the southwestern part of Montgomery County has expired, but a severe thunderstorm warning remains in effect.

(Updated at 6:57 p.m. Monday); MONTGOMERY COUNTY, MD — The tornado warning issued for the southwestern part of Montgomery County has expired, but a severe thunderstorm warning remains in effect Monday evening.

A severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado was located near Purcellville, Va. at 6:12 p.m., forecasters said. The tornado warning is in effect until 6:45 p.m.

A severe thunderstorm warning is in effect until 9 p.m. Monday.

Forecasters said severe thunderstorms were located along a line in Virginia, extending from Poolesville to Arcola, to six miles west of Warrenton.

Golf ball size hail large enough to dent vehicles and 70 mph wind gusts were reported.

Strong winds are expected in Montgomery County, with gusts up to 60-70 mph.

The storms brings the potential of flooding and hail, and residents should prepare for toppled trees and power outages.

Planes are temporarily grounded at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport in Arlington, Va. and Washington Dulles International Airport in Dulles, Va.

Monday Night: Showers and thunderstorms before midnight, then a slight chance of showers. Some storms could be severe, with large hail, damaging winds, and heavy rain. Low around 67. South wind around 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Tuesday: Scattered showers and thunderstorms after 2pm. Patchy fog before 11am. Otherwise, increasing clouds, with a high near 90. Southwest wind 6 to 13 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%.

Tuesday Night: Showers and thunderstorms likely before 11pm, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm between 11pm and 2am, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2am. Patchy fog between 11pm and 2am. Otherwise, cloudy, with a low around 67. West wind 5 to 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New rainfall amounts between three quarters and one inch possible.
