ROCKVILLE, MD — Three people were injured when the deck they were standing on collapsed last week, Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Chief Scott Goldstein said in a video posted to Twitter.

Fire and Rescue responded to the collapse on Friday in Rockville where three people were trapped — two below the deck and one on top. Two were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries, Goldstein said.

The deck was attached to a ledger board — which connects the deck to the house — on one side and supported by beams on the other.

"I don't know the specific details, but this appears to have pulled away from the house and the ledger board," said Goldstein. "The furniture slid into the remaining crevice, and that's what caused some of the injuries here."

Goldstein said they were lucky — the deck was about seven feet tall and could have caused more serious injuries if it had landed on them. Residents with decks should check to see if anything is loose, wobbling, or creaking.

"Those are early warning signs to the dangers at hand," said Goldstein in the video. "Contact you local 311 or your building department for assistance on how to make sure your deck is safe and secure."

There was another deck collapse in Montgomery County in June which sent six people to the hospital. The Germantown deck was likely overcrowded, Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Spokesperson Pete Piringer said at the time.
