Two-Time U.S. Open Champ DQ'd From Woodmont Qualifier

A two-time U.S. Open champion was sent home early from a qualifying tournament in Rockville Monday for wearing the wrong shoes, according to media reports.

Lee Janzen, the 1993 and 1998 U.S. Open champion wore steel spikes at the U.S. Open sectional qualifier at Woodmont Country Club, leading to his disqualification, The Golf Channel reported.

Steel spikes were not permitted for qualifying or practice rounds, according to the report.

Janzen confirmed the disqualification in a tweet, saying he was more concerned with a poor performance in his morning round that put him far back of the cut line for qualifiers.

The 2013 U.S. Open will be held June 10-16 at Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, PA.

Two weeks later, the PGA Tour will arrive in Montgomery County for Tiger Woods' AT&T National. The tournament will be held June 27-30 at Bethesda's Congressional Country Club.
