Beloved mother and community activist Wilma Shelton Bell, 70, died on Sunday, July 5, in Rockville. She was born Wilma Lou Shelton on October 8, 1944, to parents Henry and Lucinda Shelton.
Wilma graduated from Richard Montgomery High School in 1962 and married Julius Bell in 1965. She was employed with the federal government and retired from a successful career within the Department of Commerce as a secretary for the office of the director, National Institute for Standards and Technology in Gaithersburg.

Wilma was an advocate volunteer and served on the citizen’s task force for community policing. She served on committees for affordable housing and was active in local politics. While serving as commissioner of Rockville Housing Authority, Bell sought private funding for the construction of the Legacy Homes located in the Lincoln Park community.
Wilma enjoyed baking, crossword puzzles, crochet, and most of all, her love of Rockville and network of trusted friends.

She is survived by her children, Timothy and Christina Bell, granddaughter BridgetteBell, sister Fran Kearney Hawkins, brother-in-law Melvin O. Hawkins, niece Jill Smith, and Great niece Amber Matthews.
A graveside service will be held at noon Wednesday, July 15, at Lincoln Park Cemetery, North Horners Lane and Dover Road in Rockville.
