Hans Riemer Enters Three-Way County Executive Race

ROCKVILLE, MD — Hans Riemer has joined the race for Montgomery County Executive, running against incumbent Marc Elrich and David Blair, an entrepreneur and philanthropist.

Riemer has served as a council member for three terms, the maximum allowed in Montgomery County. He cited economic development, housing, police reform, education, climate policy, and finishing the Purple Line as primary areas of concern if he is elected county executive.

"The Montgomery County Executive can set the tone and the pace for our dynamic and thriving community — by bringing people and ideas together to move us into the future," Riemer wrote in an announcement on his campaign website. "Montgomery County needs progressive leadership that is effective and forward thinking. It is time to move on from the politics of the past. You know my deep convictions for Democratic values and my record as a councilmember with a vision for the future."

The Oakland, California, native moved to Washington, D.C., after he graduated from college and founded a nonprofit with the goal of preventing the privatization of Social Security, according to his campaign site. He later joined Rock the Vote and worked to increase youth participation in the 2004 election, then joined the Obama campaign as the National Youth Vote Director. Following the election, Riemer became a senior advisor at AARP and was elected to the Montgomery County Council in 2010.

Riemer lives with his wife and two children, who attend Montgomery County Public Schools, in Takoma Park.
