New Mural on Holton Lane

New mural project beginning mid-March to create a mural on 1337 Holton Lane, Takoma Park, MD.

The Takoma/Langley Crossroads Development Authority (CDA) has contracted with Krsko Group to create a new mural at 1337 Holton Lane, Takoma Park. The new mural is across the street from a large mural created in 2015 by Krsko titled “Migratory: Freedom”, a fitting theme for the area’s international character. The mural featured a collage of migratory animals to represent natural movements around the globe.

The artists will create a new work of art with inspiration from the local community, participating neighbors and also the previous mural. In 2015, over hundred local residents participated in creation of the mural either by offering their feedback during community meetings, interacting with artists during workshops or painting the mural. The theme and its original representation offered a platform for educational and uplifting discussions that covered social science, biology, biophysics and environmental science. The artists anticipate building upon this interdisciplinary, educational and community-based process while creating the new mural.

The project will begin in March with two community meetings organized by Krsko to solicit ideas from area residents and local businesses. The first meeting on March 17 from 6-8pm, will have artists introduce past projects, process, and vision for the mural, and engage in an exchange of ideas with the community. At the second meeting on March 23 from 6:30-8:30pm, artists will present an updated sketch that incorporates ideas and imagery from the first meeting. Both meetings will be held at the Takoma Park Recreation Center, 7315 New Hampshire Avenue, Takoma Park.

Extensive outreach will be done by Krsko Group and CDA to encourage public participation in the mural project. Once painting begins in mid-May, volunteers will be invited to join in, giving residents and young artists a role in the project.
