‘The Dean’ Passes On, Marimba For a Song and Mizeur Gets Her Campaign On: What to Know for a (Relatively) Cooler Week Ahead

A look at 5 things to have on your radar this week in Takoma Park.

Happy Monday, Takoma Park! Here’s a look at some of the things you need to know to be in-the-know in and around town this week:

1. Feeling (slightly less) hot, hot, hot: You know it’s been warm when 89 degrees sounds good. The National Weather Service says we’ll get some respite from last week’s heat wave with highs this week “only” in the upper 80s and a fairly standard-issue July forecast that includes the chance of thunderstorms each day.

2. Pick ‘o the Week: Nothing beats outdoor concerts—except free outdoor concerts. You’ll get just that with Santa Fe, New Mexico’s Polyphony Marimba in concert at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Takoma Old Town Gazebo at 7041 Carroll Ave. Click here for more details.

3. ICYMI (In Case You Missed It): “Thank you, Mr. President.”: Venerable political journalist Helen Thomas died Saturday in Washington, DC at age 92. Our Patch obituary includes a fond remembrance of “The Dean of the White House Press Corps” from one of our own, who knew Thomas, and her reporting, well.

4. A Labor Head and a Labor of Love: Takoma Park residents made both state and national political headlines last week. Former Montgomery County Councilman Tom Perez was (finally) confirmed as U.S. Secretary of Labor. Meanwhile, Del. Heather Mizeur—a former Takoma Park City Council member—announced: “I’m running for governor because I love this state.”
