This National Historic Park has sublime views of the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Potomac and Shenandoah river valleys. There's about 20 miles of hiking trails, including the midpoint of the 2,178-mile Appalachian Trail. The park is also deeply enriched with Civil War history. Prince William Forest Park

Prince William Forest Park is a natural refuge just a short distance from the DMV. With 37 miles of trails of varying difficulty, the park is a family friend place that many people enjoy. You can also camp overnight in one of the park's eight different camping sites for $20. Plan your hike here.

Shenandoah National Park
This park is a little further away, but the drive is worth it. With cascading waterfalls, quiet wooded hollows, and 200,000 acres of protected land, Shenandoah is beautiful beyond words. Hike over 500 miles of trails and experience the peaceful solitude of winter. Plus, you're more likely to see woodland animals during colder months. Check out beautiful views of the Potomac River, the beach trail and interesting wildlife (like snapping turtles) at Mason Neck State Park. The hiking is on the easier side, so this park is perfect for beginners. Bring your dog with you because there are a ton of furry friends running around.
