The $2.5 million gift is the largest donation in the hospital's history.

As baseball fans wonder whether the Baltimore Orioles will shell out big contracts to all-stars like Matt Wieters and Chris Davis, majority owner Peter Angelos is making sure some medical all-stars stay in the Baltimore area.

On Wednesday, Angelos announced he is gifting $2.5 million to MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center for a specialized center dedicated to diagnosing and treating lung disease.

Physicians joined local leaders, including Baltimore County councilwoman Cathy Bevins and councilman David Marks, in thanking Angelos for what is the largest donation in the hospital's 115 years of operation.

"We are thankful to Mr. Angelos, for putting a focus on all aspects of fighting lung disease," said Sam Moskowitz, president of MedStar Franklin Square. "With his support, we can make available the highest standard of care and the most advanced in medical treatment."

Angelos, an attorney by trade, has made a career representing people harmed by asbestos, so this donation to lung cancer treatment fits with his background.

"Hopefully it's just one [donation] of many to come in the future, and I'm sure that's going to happen," Angelos said during the announcement.
