Trees Down Across Towson Area, Storm Event Under Investigation

Officials advised drivers to avoid several roads, including Joppa Road and Charles Street, due to storm damage.

TOWSON, MD — There have been several reports of storm damage around Baltimore County Monday evening, including in Towson. Before 6 p.m., Baltimore County emergency management officials said that they were awaiting word from the National Weather Service regarding what type of weather event occurred.

The following damage had been reported, officials said, as of 6 p.m.:

  • Tree into house at 700 block of Morningside Drive; no injuries reported as of 5:55 p.m.
  • West Joppa Road closed between Bosley Avenue and Woodbine Avenue due to storm damage.
  • Charles Street at Greenwood Road closed due to trees down.

More than 17,700 BGE customers were without power as of 6:30 p.m. in Baltimore County, according to the utility company's outage map.

The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning for several areas, including Baltimore County and Baltimore City, until 5:30 p.m. on Monday. Radar showed a severe thunderstorm with 60 mph wind gusts over Lochearn at 4:52 p.m. that was moving southeast at 20 mph, according to weather officials.
After 5 p.m., Baltimore County emergency personnel said that the storm was moving through Towson.

Weather officials warned people to go inside and stay away from trees when the storm was passing through the area; wind gusts could cause trees and branches to fall, blocking roads and knocking out power.

Weather officials said locations that could be impacted during the severe thunderstorm warning included Baltimore, Pikesville, Dundalk, Towson, Catonsville, Woodlawn, Randallstown, Parkville, Owings Mills, Carney, Milford Mill, Perry Hall, Lochearn, Arbutus, Rosedale, Rossville, Brooklyn Park, Mays Chapel, Timonium and White Marsh. Drivers should not drive in wooded areas until the threat has passed.
