3 Alerts Issued Due To Water Quality In Baltimore County

Recreational water users should exercise caution at three areas in Baltimore County due to potential contamination, officials say.

BALTIMORE COUNTY, MD — Baltimore County officials have issued three alerts Monday around water quality in the area.

Sanitary sewer overflows prompted water contact alerts at two locations:

  • Parks Run and lower Beaver Dam Run in Cockeysville
  • Big Gunpowder River downstream from the Loch Raven Dam

The Baltimore County Environmental Health Services issues water contact alerts to let people know they should not drink stream water; they should avoid contact if they have cuts or wounds; and they should minimize hand-to-mouth contact if they are in the water. People should wash their hands thoroughly before eating if in the area.

A water quality advisory is also in effect for the freshwater portion of the Patapsco River. Officials say they issue this type of advisory when sewage contamination is not a factor but stormwater may produce contaminated conditions.

The two water contact alerts and the water quality advisory are in effect until further notice.
