Basketball Gym Opens In Towson For Pickup Games

A pro basketball player has opened a gym in Towson that offers, among other services, pickup games staffed by referees.

TOWSON, MD — San Antonio Spurs player Rudy Gay has opened a gym in Towson that specializes in basketball pickup games. Gay, who is a Baltimore native, owns the PickUp USA fitness club that held a soft opening this week.

At the gym, trained referees oversee the pickup games, which are played in 10-minute intervals back to back.

There are also daily basketball boot camps, weight and cardio rooms, one-on-one private training and basketball court rentals.

The games are the biggest draw, according to PickUp USA's operating partner, Matt Silva.

"Our officiated pickup basketball games are one of the most popular services," Silva said in a statement. Staff organizes the games so all players have equal time on the court, he said.

"The Towson basketball community is excited and ready for a place that puts them first," Silva said in a statement Tuesday, on the heels of the gym's Feb. 1 soft opening. "Calls are also pouring in from Carney, Parkville, Overlea, Rossville, Rosedale, Lochearn, Pikesville and Baltimore."

The PickUp USA gym is among one of seven nationwide. Others are in Chandler, Arizona; Irwindale, California; Tampa, Florida; Madison Heights, Michigan; Coppell, Texas; and Houston, Texas.

The Towson gym opened in November, according to The Baltimore Sun. However, the courts were not ready for pickup games until this year, according to the gym.

PickUp USA is at 8855 Orchard Tree Lane in Towson.
