BCPL Summer @ Your Library Program Begins

The program aims to keep students engaged and their stomachs full during the summer break.

From Baltimore County Public Library: Baltimore County Public Schools will close their doors for the summer this week and the staff at Baltimore County Public Library (BCPL) will be waiting. BCPL’s annual Summer @ Your Library program begins on Wednesday, June 14, and features reading challenges, programs and meals for children.

Summer @ Your Library (formerly Summer Reading Club) is a free program developed to encourage children and teens to read over their school break in order to prevent the “summer slide.” The program focuses on keeping keep students’ minds active and engaged during their summer break, with incentives for reading and a wide array of programs focusing on science, technology, arts and math (STEAM), making and more.

Though geared toward school-age children on summer break, people of all ages can participate in the Summer @ Your Library reading challenge. Registration for the pre-school, elementary, teen and adult challenges can be completed on bcpl.info or at all BCPL branches*. Once registered, participants will receive game boards, a Summer @ Your Library bag (must be picked up from a branch) and be on their way to winning prizes. Programs vary throughout the summer and are always free.

Ten branches will serve free boxed lunches to those 18 and younger (provided by Baltimore County Public School’s Office of Food and Nutrition Services) each weekday throughout the summer break. Participating branches include Arbutus; Essex; Lansdowne; Loch Raven; North Point; Randallstown; Reisterstown; Rosedale; White Marsh and Woodlawn.

"Summer @ Your Library is one of the most critical and impactful programs that BCPL hosts each year," said BCPL Director Paula Miller. "More than 50,000 school-aged children participate annually, and the program helps to maintain and even improve the academic levels students attained during the school year.”

This year’s Summer @ Your Library sponsors include Rosedale Federal Savings & Loan Association, Maryland 529, Growing Smiles, and WBAL-TV.
