Carver Student Dies After Charles Street Crash: Police

Police said a 17-year-old George Washington Carver student died as the result of a crash on Charles Street.

TOWSON, MD — A senior at George Washington Carver Center died Tuesday morning following a crash on Charles Street in Towson, according to police. Officials said the teen was in a minor crash that turned deadly when she was hit by wires after getting out of her car.

The crash occurred near the entrance to Loyola Blakefield at 7:13 a.m., according to authorities. Her car went off the road north of Chestnut Avenue, jumped the curb and slid up the guardrail, hitting a BGE pole, police said.

The pole broke and fell across north and southbound lanes on the road, according to authorities.

Kayla Winter Perry, 17, of the unit block of Phlox Circle in Owings Mills, was standing outside her Honda Accord when a box truck that was going south on Charles Street ran into the low-hanging wires, which subsequently hit and threw her onto the shoulder of Charles Street, police said.

The wires were "driven toward her until they hit her," Officer Jennifer Peach of the Baltimore County Police Department told WBAL-TV.

After medics provided first aid at the crash site, Perry was taken to Greater Baltimore Medical Center, where police said she was later pronounced deceased.

Two other vehicles were hit by the wires that stretched across the road, damaging both vehicles and injuring one driver, who was hospitalized for treatment of minor injuries, officials said.

Charles Street was closed from Chestnut Avenue to Kenilworth Drive until about 11 a.m., police said.

Counselors will be available for several days for students at Baltimore County Public Schools, officials reported.

Police encouraged those who need support to call 443-809-2775 or the Baltimore County Police Mobile Crisis Hotline at 410-931-2214 or for an immediate response, call 911.

The Baltimore County Police Department's Crash Investigation Team is still investigating the crash.

INITIAL REPORT — A driver was seriously injured Tuesday morning in Towson, causing the closure of Charles Street, according to authorities. The person had driven into a guard rail, then gotten out of the vehicle at the time of the crash, police said.

The incident happened on Charles Street/MD 139 at Bellona Avenue, according to the Baltimore County Police Department. Two vehicles were involved in the incident, which was reported before 8 a.m., state transportation officials said.

Southbound traffic was able to get by around 10 a.m. but the northbound lanes are expected to remain closed until 11 a.m., police said.

In the first couple of hours after the collision, Charles Street was closed between Kenilworth Drive and Chestnut Avenue, police said, and streets surrounding the crash site were also impacted.

"Surrounding roadways have major delays," police advised after 9 a.m. "Avoid the entire area."

As authorities handle the crash, police suggested using Dulaney Valley and Providence roads as alternate ways to get to the Towson area; drivers should avoid York Road, Charles Street and Kenilworth Avenue.

Wires and poles were down as a result of the crash, Fox 45 reported.
