A Concert Homage To 'Papa' Haydn Planned In Towson

Towson United Methodist Church will host a dynamic Bach in Baltimore concert homage to Haydn, including Heiligmesse and "Surprise Symphony."

Classical music fans are in for a treat on March 1 at 4 p.m. at Towson United Methodist Chuch for Bach in Baltimore's concert homage to the Classical composer Joseph Haydn, who famously said, "There was no one near to confuse me, so I was forced to become original."

Bach in Baltimore, under the esteemed direction of T. Herbert Dimmock, performs Heiligmesse, Missa Sancti Bernardi von Offida in B-flat major, a sumptuous mass featuring the full Bach in Baltimore Choir; soprano, alto, tenor, and bass soloists; and gorgeous instrumentation with oboes, clarinets, bassoons, trumpets, timpani, and organ.

Then the orchestra will perform Symphony No. 94 in G major, often called the “Surprise Symphony” for its unexpected “surprise” chord that bursts forth in the 2nd movement. Haydn’s beloved composition is full of fun jokes, including a musical flirtation between the flute and bassoon or a “wrong” chord popping up here and there.

The featured artists for this performance include Stephanie Kruskol, soprano; Taylor Boykins, alto; Joseph Regan, tenor; and David Dimmock, bass. Additionally, the concert will also showcase the Richard Montgomery High School Madrigals as the Student Voice Exchange Choir.

At each and every Bach in Baltimore concert, patrons are treated to more than gorgeous music in a beautiful space. They are also guided by Maestro Dimmock to understand the music on a deeper level, which enhances the listening experience. Dimmock offers the audience a rare insight into the featured composer's highly personal and nuanced musical language with an impactful presentation about the program of selected works. The March 1st concert will be no different. Dimmock will highlight Haydn's long music career, noting features of his composing style that endeared and "electrified" audiences.
