GBMC Receives Achievement Award For Stroke Treatment

--American Heart Association Award recognizes GBMC's commitment to quality stroke care--

The Primary Stroke Center at GBMC recently received the 2020 American Heart Association’s (AHA) Get With The Guidelines® (GWTG)-Stroke: Gold Plus with Target: Stroke Elite Honor Roll and Target: Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll.

The award recognizes the Primary Stroke Center at GBMC meeting specific quality measures for the diagnosis and treatment of stroke patients and for their commitment to ensuring that stroke patients receive care based on the latest scientific evidence.

“This award is a testament to our Stroke Center’s strong commitment to reliably providing care according to nationally recognized, research-based guidelines," said John Chessare, MD, President and CEO of GBMC HealthCare. “I want to thank all of our clinicians for their hard work and dedication to achieving this level of performance.”

The Primary Stroke Center at GBMC achieved 85% or higher adherence in all measures for transient ischemic attack (TIA) and a rate of 90% compliance or higher for at least 12 consecutive months for diabetic patients. The award also recognizes 75% or higher compliance with five or more measures to achieve the Plus Award.

According to the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association, stroke is the No. 5 cause of death and a leading cause of adult disability in the United States. On average, someone in the U.S. suffers a stroke every 40 seconds and nearly 795,000 people suffer a new or recurrent stroke each year.
