MDTA Officer Charged With Theft, Misappropriation of Fraternal Order of Police Funds

Shane Shapiro is a former president of FOP Lodge 34 in Middle River, which represents MDTA officers.

A Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) police officer has been arrested and charged with theft.

Corporal Shane Shapiro, 36, has been charged with theft of an amount between $10,000 and $100,000. Authorities said he turned himself in Wednesday afternoon at the Towson Precinct and was released on $10,000 bail.

The charges stem from an investigation into missing and misappropriated funds from the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) Lodge 34, where Shapiro is a former President. FOP Lodge 34 represents MDTA police officers, and is located in Middle River.

The investigation is being conducted by the Baltimore County Police Financial and Cyber Crimes Unit.

Authorities said in a statement, "Due to the sensitive nature and early stage of the investigation, no further information is available at this time."
