Boomer Robert Phelps was born on Cinco de Mayo 2016. That was a whirlwind year for his dad, who won five gold medals at the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, bringing his medal count to 23 gold and 28 overall; that year, Michael Phelps also married Nicole Johnson in two weddings.

The experience of being a father, Michael Phelps said, made an indelible impression.

"Being able to go through this process for the first time is something that I'll remember forever," Phelps told USA Today when Boomer Phelps was born.

Michael Phelps retired after the 2016 Olympics and said his plans were to dedicate himself to family and travel. With 23 gold medals and 28 overall, the swimmer is the most decorated Olympian of all time.
