New Mother Reported To Child Protective Services Over Bagel
What a pregnant woman eats for breakfast could determine whether she gets to bring her baby home from one hospital in Towson.

TOWSON, MD — What one mother ate for breakfast before she gave birth resulted in Child Protected Services being called. No, she did not ingest a bunch of pills or accidentally eat some meth. This mother ate a poppy seed bagel for breakfast.
Elizabeth Eden was in labor at St. Joseph Medical Center in Towson on April 4 when she was informed by a doctor that she tested positive for opiates and the state had been notified, according to WBAL.
Despite her asking for a retest and letting them know she had a poppy seed bagel for breakfast, Eden told WBAL her child was away from her for five days while a case worker investigated. After she did some research on the subject of poppy seeds, she is asking the hospital to make modifications to its screening process so that no other mother has to endure what she did, an experience she described as "traumatizing."
