This is not the first time the outfit has been at the center of a scam. A little more than a year ago, the York County Economic Alliance warned of fake invoices issued for the West York High School 2018-2019 winter sports poster with payments going to Sports Media at 722 Dulaney Valley Road, #267, Towson, MD 21204.

In June 2017, a New York-based police department said Sports Media was trying to scam those in the Catskill Central School District out of paying $169 for advertisements in the Catskill High School's 2017 fall sports poster. In that case, people were told to send money to an address for Sports Media in Memphis, Tennessee. The police department also alerted the public that the Better Business Bureau had placed an alert on the company's listing, and other police departments had warned the public of its attempts to scam people out of money and credit card information.

The Better Business Bureau announced in November 2017 that it had recognized a "pattern of complaints" in which consumers said they paid Sports Media purportedly to sponsor a local high school sports program or team through advertising and were later told by the school district that the material was not produced and the media company was not affiliated with the school system. Consumers were reportedly charged annually without their consent, and Sports Media did not respond to the Better Business Bureau's notice about the pattern of complaints.

Sports Media has had 75 complaints in the last three years, including 37 in the past year, according to the Better Business Bureau.

Current information from the Better Business Bureau has Sports Media based out of Portland, Oregon, with another location at 722 Dulaney Valley Road in Towson.
