Towson Students Celebrate 'Alternative Spring Break'

A group of students from the university decided to forgo a trip to the beach in favor of a volunteer opportunity.

While many of their classmates were visiting home or on vacation in warmer climes, a group of four Towson University students opted instead to volunteer their time to help those less fortunate.

Towson University seniors Caleb DeMario and Minju Zukowski, along with sophomore Aiyana Dancy and freshman Tiara Dolberry, spent time last week working with the United Way of Central Maryland for 'Alternative Spring Break'.

From March 18 to 22, the spring breakers took part in a number of events focused around food insecurity and hunger, according to a news release from the United Way of Central Maryland.

The students took a bus tour of Baltimore food deserts and local healthy food programs; attended a public policy briefing in Washington D.C. and meeting with anti-hunger advocate Rep. Jim McGovern; and volunteered at United Way’s Family Food Day.

"I've enjoyed getting seeing local programs doing good," said Towson senior DiMario.

They also worked to prepare a community garden for Franklin Square Elementary School in Baltimore, the release states.

"United Way’s Alternative Spring Break helps unite local students with their community. It can be an eye opening experience, and it’s very meaningful for them," said Christiana Mercer, UWCM’s Alternative Spring Break manager. "We’re thrilled to have the support of so many local universities, helping to get their students to focus their energy in our community."
