Area AKA Chapters Serve on MLK Day

500 Registered Volunteers serve on MLK Day

Fort Washington, MD - Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Chapters across the country and abroad sponsored service project events on that Sunday, January 21, 2019 during the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service.

Locally, the Upsilon Tau Omega (UTO), Psi Epsilon Omega (PEO) and Iota Gamma Omega (IGO) graduate chapters in Prince George’s County, MD celebrated the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at City of Praise in Landover, MD. 500 registered attendees made their way to celebrate the late civil rights leader by listening to students from area high schools passionately recite the “I Have A Dream” speech, the sweet sounds of a young soloist and a strong dance performance. Afterwards, volunteers assisted with collecting approximately 245 eyeglasses, 411 toiletries, 1,021 pairs of shoes and made 250 pillowcase dresses. The dresses will be delivered to children who live in Haiti.

“Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service allows us to honor the life and legacy of a true pioneer while being of service to our community” said Trenisha Forbes, Vice President, UTO Chapter.
