Historian Writes Letter to Save Upper Marlboro School

In the letter, historian Susan G. Pearl summarizes the long history of the Old Marlboro Elementary School.

 

With all the surrounding the , local historian Susan G. Pearl has added her voice to the fray, writing a letter to detail the school's robust history.

The letter, posted on the Town of Upper Marlboro's website, was written as a way to halt the school's demolition.

"There are, of course, serious logistical problems that would have to be resolved before proceeding with such a plan," Pearl wrote in the letter. "The property has been designated an historic site under the county’s Preservation Ordinance, because of its importance in the history of education of the white students of the area."

According to town commissioners, Prince George's County wants to build a Family Justice Center on the school's property. Town leaders have expressed concern over the project, saying the county didn't inform them of their construction plans.

" ... This site has been an important educational landmark in the county seat," Pearl wrote.
