An Upper Marlboro man walking in a roadway was fatally hit by a car early Monday and died, state police say.

CLINTON, MD — An Upper Marlboro man walking in a roadway was fatally hit by a car early Monday and died, Maryland State Police say. The victim is identified as Jordan C. Barber, 26, of Upper Marlboro. He was pronounced dead at MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital Center.

The driver of the vehicle involved is Melanie R. Middleton, 30, of Waldorf. She was driving a 1998 Toyota Corolla. She reported no injuries following the crash, authorities say.

Shortly after 4:30 a.m. Monday, Maryland State Police from the Forestville Barrack received a report that a pedestrian was struck on southbound Branch Avenue, north of Woodyard Road. Troopers found Barber lying near the shoulder of the road. Middleton remained at the scene. Prince George's County EMS personnel took Barber to the hospital.

According to the preliminary investigation, Barber was a passenger in a car driven by a relative. When they stopped at a traffic light near the scene, the victim got out of the vehicle and his relative drove further down the road so traffic would not be impeded.

Moments later, Barber was walking in a travel lane of Branch Avenue when he was struck by the southbound car driven by Middleton, police said. Troopers found no indication that Middleton was impaired by alcohol or drugs.
