Several Road Projects to Take Place Near Upper Marlboro

Expect plenty of detours this summer.

Local motorists might have a tougher time on the roads during the State Highway Administration's resurfacing projects, all of which will continue until next year.

All projects have scheduled nighttime lane and ramp closures between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m., Sunday through Thursday, with Monday through Friday daytime closures as needed between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. for the work along southbound I-95.

Traffic may be detoured during different phases of construction, along with temporary ramp closures this summer. Travel advisories will be issued prior to any detours or ramp work.

Ramp resurfacing in Suitland

A $230,000 resurfacing project on the shared ramp from southbound I-95/I-495 (Capital Beltway) to Auth Road/southbound MD 5 (Branch Avenue) in Camp Springs. The shared ramp splits into two separate ramps to serve motorists accessing either Auth Road or southbound MD 5. Weather permitting, construction will be complete this summer.

Work includes removing the top layer of asphalt and resurfacing both ramps. SHA will also install new pavement markings. According to the SHA, the work is necessary because the base layer of the roadway has settled and created an uneven driving surface on the ramp.  The irregular surface can pose a safety hazard for motorists exiting from southbound I-95/I-495 to MD 5 and Auth Road.

An overnight seven-mile detour will be required this summer, motorists will use the ramp for westbound MD 414 (Saint Barnabas Road) and use the MD 414 interchange to re-enter northbound I-95/I-495 to head back to southbound MD 5.

Five miles of Southbound I-95 to be resurfaced

A $3.8 million safety and resurfacing project on a five-mile section of southbound I-95/I-495 (Capital Beltway) between D’Arcy Road and MD 5 (Branch Avenue), the MD 4 (Pennsylvania Avenue) entrance and exit ramps, and the bridges over Suitland Road, Suitland Parkway and MD 4. Weather permitting, the project should be complete spring 2012.

SHA will grind and resurface southbound I-95/I-495 between MD 5 and D’Arcy Road, the ramps to MD 4 from southbound I-95/I-495, the ramps to southbound I-95/I-495 from MD 4 and the bridges over Suitland Road, Suitland Parkway and MD 4.
