Upper Marlboro Man Hit, Killed By Metrobus On I-495

An Upper Marlboro man who had recently been reported missing to Prince George's County Police was fatally hit by a Metrobus.

FORESTVILLE, MD – An Upper Marlboro man died early Saturday morning after he was struck by a Metrobus while crossing I-495 in Forestville, according to Maryland State Police. James Albert Gibson, 79, was struck at about 12:30 a.m. on the southbound lanes of I-495 north of MD Route 4. There were no passengers on the bus when the accident happened.

Investigators say the DC Circulator bus driver immediately stopped the bus on the right shoulder of the road to check on the victim and then called police. Prince George’s County EMS declared Gibson dead at the scene.

Gibson had been reported missing by local police shortly before the crash. His body was taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore for an autopsy to determine the cause of death.

Troopers from the Forestville Barrack, along with troopers from the state police’s Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division and Crash Team, along with Prince George’s County police and EMS, responded to the crash.

The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration closed three of the four lanes of I-495 for several hours after the crash.
