Upper Marlboro Resident to Act in "Hairspray"

The play is part of the county's Summer Teen Theatre.

Daryn Robinson, of Upper Marlboro, will play the character of "Kamillah" in the local adaption of "Hairspray," playing in Beltsville this weekend.

Robinson joins a group of 38 teenagers who are either acting in, or working behind the scenes of the new interpretation of the famous 1988 musical. Jarreau Williams, of Clinton, will also play the character of "Duane."

Hairspray is set in 1962 as the country leaves behind the 50’s and enters into a whole new era, one that ushers in a hipper style and desegregation. This is shown on a small scale when Tracy Turnblad goes after her dream to dance on the Baltimore dance show.

Her upbeat and optimistic outlook on life gets her the spot on the Corny Collins Show, lets her mother Edna see that beauty comes in all shapes and sizes, allows her to desegregate the dance show, and win Miss Teenage Hairspray. These characters are brought to life by new and veteran actors.

For 44 years, the Summer Teen Theatre has been supported by an all-volunteer Board of Directors, relying on the generosity of the parent volunteers who provide hours of help to get the show ready for the opening curtain.

There's only one weekend left to see the show. Remaining shows are Friday and Saturday at 8:00 pm. Both performances are at High Point High School, 3601 Powder Mill Road in Beltsville. Tickets are available on the day of the show at the box office or online at www.pgstt.org
