Life Alert Scam: Don't Fall For it

If the “I’ve fallen and I can’t get up” people call unsolicited – hang up.

According to a statement released by Commissioner Robin Fraizer, Carroll County residents have been targeted by a nationwide telemarketing scam. Residents have received recorded messages fraudulently claiming to be from Life Alert, attempting to gain access to bank account information. 

According to Life Alert, the recording says something to the effect of “someone has purchased a Life Alert system for you,” or “You qualify for a free Life Alert.”  Other calls say they are confirming a free order or an upgrade, according to a statement from the company. 

“All of these are telemarketing scammers trying to mislead and defraud consumers by using our trademarked name so they can get your address, credit card number and bank information to charge you,” the statement reads.

Life Alert does not use cold calls as part of its marketing, according to the statement. And consumers should never give credit card information over the phone to anyone unless the consumer initiated the call. 

Life Alert is working with authorities to investigate the scam, which is occurring nationwide, according to the statement.
