McDaniel College students will team up with more than 100 elementary, middle and high school students with special needs Friday, April 5, for the 30th annual Tournament of Champions.

Tournament of Champions allows the students to participate alongside McDaniel buddies who are primarily student-athletes or Kinesiology majors at McDaniel. The students challenge themselves individually and achieve their best scores in various athletic events, such as parachute play, scooter races, Frisbee toss and bowling, among others.

All events are modified to meet the individual needs of the participants. Students do not compete against each other and can go back to any of the event stations to better their own scores.

Organized by students in McDaniel College’s adapted physical education class in conjunction with Carroll County Public Schools, the event is open to students with orthopedic, visual and behavioral needs who attend public, private, or home schools. These students do not qualify for Special Olympics but need a specialized event so that they can challenge themselves and demonstrate their skills.

Jamie Costello, WMAR-TV anchor, will serve as emcee for the opening ceremony in celebration of the event's 30th anniversary.
