Runnymede Elementary Event Helps Carroll County Food Sunday

Students walk to raise funds for food bank

Runnymede Elementary School held its 22nd annual walk to benefit Carroll County Food Sunday on April 29. Students and staff raised just over $10,000 during the event.

Carroll County Food Sunday Executive Director Ed Leister presented a plaque to Runnymede Principal Martin Tierney on August 2 acknowledging the proceeds. Over the past 22 years, Runnymede has raised over $187,500 for the food bank.

Last year Carroll County Food Sunday met over 17,500 requests for supplemental groceries to food insecure residents of Carroll County. While just over 93,000 pounds of food were donated, Food Sunday purchased over 179,300 pounds at a cost of just under $290,000.

Initially started as a faith-based effort to collect food at Sunday services, Carroll County Food Sunday was founded in 1982 to serve the food insecure. Today the organization distributes a weekly, nutritionally balanced grocery package to over 400 families per week at its Westminster, Eldersburg and Taneytown locations.

Carroll County Food Sunday meets the growing need through food donations and financial support from the community. Daily operations are managed by two part-time employees and numerous volunteers, and governance is provided by a volunteer Board of Directors. Visit www.ccfoodsunday.org for more information.
