At State Fair, Three Carroll Youths Win Awards for Livestock
The results of the 4-H livestock sale are in from the Maryland State Fair.

Three Carroll County residents were rewarded with more than $10,000 combined for their prize livestock at the Maryland State Fair’s 4-H/FFA livestock sale, according to a statement from fair officials.
The sale was the end of a yearlong project challenging young people to prepare their animals for competition. Four participants came away as grand champions, and three were from Carroll.
Here are the results of the 134th livestock sale at the Maryland State Fair, according to the statement:

- Audrey Bennett of Union Bridge in Carroll County sold her 105-pound grand champion market goat to South Mountain Creamery in Frederick for $800.
- Casey Bounds of Taneytown in Carroll County sold her 127-pound grand champion market lamb to Giant Food store in Timonium for $2,095.50 ($16.50 per pound).
- Hailee Wilson of Clear Spring in Washington County sold her 282-pound grand champion market hog to AC&T Co, Inc. of Hagerstown; Bowman Trailer Sales of Williamsport; Creekston Landscape & Excavating of Clear Spring; Hamby Haven Show Pigs of Williamsport; Jason Hose/MacKentosh Realty of Hagerstown; Hostetter Grain of Oxford, Pa.; and Don Spickler Insurance of Hagerstown for $2608.50 ($9.25 per pound).
- Tate Bittner of Westminster in Carroll County sold his 1,318-pound grand champion market steer to Giant Food for $8,567 ($6.50 per pound).
“This is an excellent opportunity for the youth,” State Fair Livestock Sale Chairman Kathy Gordon said in a statement. In all, 64 young people between the ages of 8 and 18 participated.
“They have invested a lot of time and money in their livestock in order to prepare them for competition and auction,” Gordon said. “It teaches them responsibility for their animals, how to make wise management decisions, and provides the financial support and encouragement necessary to meet future goals.”
