Westminster To Plant Trees For Arbor Day 2018

The city is planting dogwood and hawthorn trees on April 27.

From the City of Westminster: The City of Westminster and the Westminster Tree Commission are pleased to announce that the City’s annual Arbor Day Celebration will take place at 10:30 a.m. on April 27, 2018. The public is encouraged to attend the ceremony, which will take place at Dutterer Family Park.

The 2018 Arbor Day Celebration will feature the planting of a Dogwood and a Hawthorn tree to commemorate the event.

The Westminster Tree Commission is also celebrating its ongoing effort to craft the City’s first Comprehensive City Tree Plan. The Plan will address the care, preservation, pruning, planting, replanting, removal, or disposition of trees and shrubs in parks, along streets, and in other public areas.

Westminster Mayor Joe Dominick stated, “I commend and thank the members of the Tree Commission for their work over the past year. One of the City’s strategic planning goals is to continually strive to make Westminster an environmentally sustainable community. The Commission’s work is instrumental to this effort, as has been recognized by the certifications we’ve received from outside organizations.”

Westminster has been recognized as a Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation for 28 years. The City has also been recognized for its high levels of tree care, having received the Tree City USA Growth Award for 22 years. Additionally, the Maryland People Loving and Nurturing Trees (PLANT) Program has recognized Westminster at the Green Level, the highest level of certification a municipality can receive, for two consecutive years.

The Westminster Tree Commission consists of six members appointed by the Mayor and confirmed by the Common Council. The members of the commission must be residents of Carroll County and at least one member shall have a background in horticulture, arboriculture, forestry or a related field.
