Maryland Weather: Timeline For Weekend's Wintry Mix

Roads may be treacherous this weekend, according to the latest forecast from the National Weather Service. How to check road conditions.

(Updated at 11:40 a.m.) It may have been a perfect Thursday, but the hottest temperatures we'll see on Friday came with the sunrise. And the colder temps will be joined by sleet, freezing rain and snow late Friday, with rain and snow possible through Monday, according to the National Weather Service.

This is still not looking like a winter storm, with the current forecast suggesting less than an inch of snow accumulating across the state. The main threat will be ice on roadways and sidewalks, possibly causing slippery conditions through the weekend.

The Maryland State Highway Administration is pre-treating roads and bridges Friday before the winter storm buffets the state starting early Saturday morning. Officials urge residents to stay off the roads Saturday night as snow is expected to switch to sleet and freezing rain that will make driving treacherous.

The timeline puts freezing rain and sleet in the area in the overnight hours, with a chance for snow and sleet after 4 a.m. That will continue through most of the afternoon before shifting to freezing rain and sleet late in the afternoon.

The freezing rain continues into the early hours Sunday before a chance of snow Sunday morning. The rest of the weekend will see a 30 percent chance of rain and snow through Monday night.
