'Strut Your Mutt' Event Raises Money For DC-Area Animal Shelters

Dog-lovers can raise money for local animal shelters in the D.C. area when they participate in Strut Your Mutt in Wheaton this Saturday.

WHEATON, MD — Dog-lovers can raise money for local animal shelters in the D.C. area when they participate in Strut Your Mutt, a fundraising event sponsored by the nation's largest no-kill sanctuary Best Friends Animal Society.

The event will be held at Wheaton Regional Park in Wheaton, Md. Saturday, Oct. 7. Registration begins at 9 a.m., while the walk begins at 10 a.m. and ends at 1 p.m. Participants can raise money for homeless pets by donating to the Best Friends Animal Society, or they can raise funds for one of the hundreds of participating shelters and animal welfare groups.

Along with the walk, you can enter your dog in Doggie Musical Chairs, the Bobbing for Biscuit contests, meet with a vet, join in the Pet/Human Costume Contest and more. There will also be a Hounds Lounge Beer Garden, craft tent, a kids zone, a silent auction and a raffle drawing. Food trucks include Kona Ice, Tasty Grill To Go and Balkanik Taste.

Strut Your Mutt events takes place all over the U.S., including Austin, Atlanta, Los Angeles, New York City, Portland, Phoenix and more. The D.C. Metro area event raised $70,000 with almost 500 people and over 265 dogs last year.

Overall, the 2016 events raised over $2.6 million to save the lives of homeless pets in 14 cities nationwide, the organization said.
