First Of Two Winter Storms Heads For Eastern Massachusetts

The first storm will dump 1-3 inches of snow on eastern Massachusetts; a bigger storm could be in the works for the weekend.

Forecasters said the bigger hit could come Sunday, when a storm system developing along the coast could bring heavy rains or, if temperatures are cold enough, up to 6 inches of snow.

MASSACHUSETTS — Forecasters are calling for a coating to 3 inches of snow in eastern Massachusetts Tuesday night into Wednesday morning.

The National Weather Service in Boston said most areas in Massachusetts would see a "quick burst" of one to two inches before 7 p.m. Tuesday. The snow may then change over to rain or a wintry mix and continue through Wednesday morning.

That may mean a slippery morning commute Wednesday. Interior parts of the state could see up to 6 inches of snow.

This January is tied for least-snowiest January on record in Massachusetts, according to the National Weather Service. But that is likely to change Tuesday night: Even a tenth of an inch of snow at Logan Airport will break the tie.

Snow could linger in the area through most of the day on Wednesday, and Friday is expected to be frigid. That could set up a snowstorm later in the weekend. Forecasters are still trying to determine whether the weekend storm will make landfall and, if it does, whether it will deliver rain or snow.
