MASSACHUSETTS — Vehicle inspections resumed at most RMV stations Saturday following a malware attack on the agency's vendor. Applus Technologies, a vendor that facilitates inspections in Massachusetts and several other states, fell victim to a malware attack on March 30, freezing vehicle inspections for nearly three weeks.

Some stations are experiencing more complex technological issues, which Applus is working to address, MassDOT said.

Applus's contract with the state requires it to compensate inspection station owners for each day that workstations were not operational. Drivers with stickers that expired in March or April have through May 31 to get their cars inspected, and newly bought vehicles registered on or after Tuesday, March 23 will have until April 30 to get an inspection.

Drivers whose inspections were rejected and are in the 60-day free retest window will be allowed one extra day for each day Applus's system remains unavailable.

The RMV estimates that there are approximately 30,000 March stickers and 160,000 April stickers that require an inspection.
