Acton Student Wins $2500 National Merit Scholarship

The 2,500 nationwide winners were selected from a pool of 16,000 finalists.

ACTON, MA — One Acton High School senior earned a $2,500 scholarship from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. The NMSC judges high school students based on their PSATs, and awards a number of scholarships in their senior year.

Michelle Gong at Acton-Boxborough Regional High School was awarded. She plans to study science and do research.

The NMSC announced corporate scholarship winners in April. Three Acton students — Emily Cheng, Lee Morgan and Mukundh Murthy — received funding from Abbvie Inc., Electric North America Foundation and Pfizer Inc., respectively.

Winners of the college-sponsored scholarships will be announced on June 2 and July 12.

"National Merit $2500 Scholarship winners are the Finalists in each state judged to have the strongest combination of accomplishments, skills, and potential for success in rigorous college studies," the announcement says. "The number of winners named in each state is proportional to the state’s percentage of the nation’s graduating high school seniors."
