Acton Surveys Residents As It Mulls Drive-Up Windows

Under Acton's town bylaws, drive-up windows are only allowed for banks, but that could change.

ACTON, MA — Acton is mulling over a proposal to allow drive-thru windows in town.

Acton's town bylaw only allows drive-thru windows for banks, but officials are circulating a survey to residents to see if that should be changed.

The push for a change in the by-law comes as the COVID-19 crisis has shifted businesses to remote and drive-up services. Acton's survey notes that neighboring communities are mulling over similar proposals, with the option being temporary.

Digital mediums have been a saving grace for many business through the pandemic and the town said it is seeing a rise in “digital drive ups,” where establishments allow customers to order and pay with an iPhone or Android app and then pick up at the drive up window.

A virtual public forum was held on Oct. 15 to discuss these issues, and a follow-up meeting will be held on Dec. 10 to present the results of this survey and continue the conversation.
