Mt. Calvary Community Supper of Acton Grieves the Loss of Their

Beloved Chairman, Mike Tobia

Dear Supper Friends,

We join you in grieving the loss of Mike Tobia, Mt. Calvary Community Supper’s founder and chairman. From its inception in 2012 until the days before pancreatic cancer took him from us, he remained a strong leader of supper operations. This year he guided us to meet the new challenges we faced to prepare and serve 200 meals curbside every week. The caring community he created of volunteers, guests and supporters reflect his passion for our mission and a gift he gave to us all.

With Mike’s oversight, supper has served over 40,000 meals through the collective efforts of hundreds of volunteers, sponsors, and donors. But the real story of Mike’s impact could be found inside Fellowship Hall every week where hugs were often exchanged, laughter heard, and new friendships formed. His primary concern was that anyone in need of a meal would be able to receive one with compassion and dignity. But in addition, to the delight of all guests, Mike loved to have celebrations; Monthly birthdays, Bring a Friend Day, 100 Holiday Meals, all the yearly holidays, and more.

Mike made a place for everyone who wanted to be a part of supper and encouraged many to join and become involved. While he was a humble man with a soft voice and kind smile, he was a powerful organizer and advocate for those in need of food or companionship. In return, the love for Mike shined through the dedication of his volunteers and partners. Through them, guests became one large family who looked forward to a weekly meal and friendship. He created a haven from any worries outside the setting at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church. As one guest stated, “While food is necessary to sustain the body, food and a community supper serve a much greater purpose of nourishing the entire human spirit as we dine and communicate with our friends and neighbors.” Mike made everyone feel welcomed and valued.

It is with great pride and humility that we continue Mike’s legacy at Mt. Calvary Community Supper alongside each of you. Supper is served every Wednesday evening. All are welcome.
