Arbor Day began when a Nebraska newspaper editor hoped to spread his enthusiasm for trees in 1872. J. Sterling Morton proposed a "tree-planting holiday," and Arbor Day was born. The Arbor Day Foundation estimates that over one million trees were planted on the first Arbor Day. Today, the holiday is celebrated in all 50 states.
