Sponsered by the Acton Garden Club

The Acton Garden Club is pleased to announce the winners of the Acton’s Looking Good Contest for 2019!

Best Curb Appeal to Cucurbit Farms. One comment left was "Not only do we have an outstanding front to the business, in the summer, Cucurbit decorates the roadway with pots of seasonal flowers , and in the other direction places planters of flowers on the Fort Pond Brook bridge. Then comes pumpkin season. No one does that season like Cucurbit. Pumpkins, pumpkins everywhere."

Most Improved to Mobil Gas Station in West Acton, with Kathleen Gildea as manager. Comments made"Tall grasses and flower shrubs at the corner of Mass Ave and Spruce Street soften the entrances into the station area. Planters of flowers are on the sides of the filling stations and the rest of the perimeter is planted with re-blooming perennials."

Continued Excellence to Vinnie Catone. Mr. Catone owns and manages many properties in town, the gas station at the corners of Rt111, and Main st, and the intersections of Main St and Rt.2A. He also is the owner of the Mass Ave CVS and the adjacent bank. All of the properties are beautifully maintained and each has a distinctive look. The gas stations have large hydrangeas and plantings lining the perimeter of the properties. The CVS property has a entrance trimmed out with interesting trees, roses, and interesting grasses. Interesting trees and hydrangea are planted along the back of the lot.

Best Retail Plaza to Acton Plaza. The representative accepting the award is Mrs Chisholm from Middlesex Bank. There are 26 planters of various sizes along the storefront. These planters are beautifully planted and or decorated to reflect the seasons of the years. The areas along the roadways are neatly maintained with grass and small shrubs along a meandering sidewalk. There is also a small play area planted with tall graceful grasses between the upper and lower sections of the plaza.

Best Landscaped Intersections to Cathy Fochtman. Traffic intersections of Nagog Road and Main Street, Concord Road and Route 2A, People intersections of Nara Park seating area and the water front, People and books at the entra"nce of the Memorial Library at the Charlotte Sagoff memorial space.

Traffic intersections are nice and are pleasing to the eye - a pleasant break from the road side weeds. But people intersections are to be savored. A place where people can get together and converse or just enjoy the beauty of the space. Comment: I was going into the library and a couple of little kids ( pre-school aged) were in the seating area. They were checking out the plants and hopping around trying to read the words imprinted on the bricks on the ground. Before they left, they found the stone that said the space was dedicated to Charlotte Sagoff and they read that too. It was like the magic Charlotte had with a lot of people.

From left to right:

1.Cathy Fochtman - Best Land

2. John Mangiaratti

3.Mobil gas Station Kathleen Gildea

4 Acton Plaza - Best Retail Mrs Chisholm

5.Vinnie Catone - continued excellence

6.Cucubit Farms Dan Porten
