Massachusetts ranks as the third-best state for teen drvers, according to a WalletHub study. New York ranks first for teen drivers, and South Dakota ranks as the worst state for teen drivers, according to the study.

With teens obtaining driver’s licenses during the summer more than any other season and an average of 250 auto-related teen deaths every month during the same period, the personal finance website WalletHub analyzed the Best and Worst States for Teen Drivers.

WalletHub compared the driving conditions for teens in all 50 states based on 16 key metrics. The data is broken down into categories that examine the safety conditions, economic environment and driving laws of each state.

Teen Driving Conditions in Massachusetts:

  • 4th – Number of Teen Driver Fatalities per Teen Population
  • 7th – Number of Teen OUIs per Teen Population
  • 1st – Presence of Distracted-Driving/Texting-While-Driving Laws
  • 12th – Auto Insurance Premium Increase After Adding a Teen Driver to a Policy
  • 1st – Presence of Teen Driver’s Graduated Licensing Program Laws
  • 9th – Number of Vehicle Miles Traveled per Capita
  • 27th – Provision of Occupant- Protection Laws
  • 11th – Quality of Roads
  • 14th – Presence of Impaired-Driving Laws
