Rachana Senghirann, 23, of Attleboro, was sentenced to 5 years in prison for last year's drive-by shooting in Providence, Rhode Island.

PROVIDENCE, RI — A 23-year-old man from Attleboro, Massachusetts, was sentenced for a drive-by shooting in Providence last year. Rachana Senghirann, of Attleboro, was ordered to serve 5 years in prison in connection with the Jan. 21, 2008 shooting, in which Senghirann is believed to have fired a .38 revolver at another vehicle on Douglas Avenue in Providence, according to prosecutors. Senghirann was a passenger in a minivan at the time.

According to the Rhode Island Attorney General's Office, Providence police heard a series of gunshots in the incident, in the area of Veazie Street and Douglass Avenue, and then saw a sedan speeding away, followed closely by a while minivan with its sliding driver's side door completely open. When police pulled over the minivan and conducted a search, they found a revolver under the driver's seat. Senghirann later admitted that he fired the revolver from the vehicle, according to the state's prosecutors.

At Providence County Superior Court this week, Senghirann pleaded nolo contendre on two felony charges relating to the incident — committing the drive-by shooting and carrying a pistol without a license. He was ordered to serve a 12-year sentence, with five of the years at Adult Correctional Institutions, and the rest of the sentence suspended with probation.
